10/50 Rule

Does your property fall within the Vegetation Clearing Entitlement area?

Anyone who might be looking to clear space in their yard or around their gardens should know about the 10/50 Rule and how the entitlement affects them.

Often when clearing unwanted trees from the land around your home you are expected to contact your local council and ask for permission and permits before you are able to begin work. The 10/50 Rule, however, allows certain homes within a specified entitlement area the ability to side-step this requirement.

If your property falls within the 10/50 Vegetation Clearing Entitlement, you are able to:

  • Clear any unwanted trees on your property within ten metres of your home without seeking council approval first
  • Clear any underlying vegetation (excluding trees) within fifty metres of your home without seeking council approval first

We can provide you with further clarity on this rule or visit the NSW Rural Fire Service website for more information.
